MY PHILOSOPHY OF ART EDUCATION

My goal as an art educator is to empower my students to explore, interpret, and respond to the world around them. By looking at art as a means for discovery, I want my students to believe that they become dreamers, seekers and creators when they enter my classroom. My motivation as an art teacher stems from a passion to help others uncover the things they never thought they could do.

Regardless of ability, I want to provide my students with the tools necessary to become more thoughtful, inquisitive, and capable artists. My role as an art educator is to foster an environment that provides opportunities for experimental, conceptual, and critical thinking. Art forces students to solve problems, and therefore builds skills necessary for all other academic disciplines.

I see my students as individuals; I seek to celebrate diversity in my classroom. I aim to use instructional strategies that highlight the cultures, backgrounds, experiences and interests of my students to promote learning. I want my students to understand how much more dynamic our art can be if we seek out the ideas and opinions of others.

I believe in a multi-faceted art curriculum that incorporates a variety of processes, media, techniques, and student choice. Besides designing cross-curricular projects that connect to prior learning, I will provide the students with a foundation that builds on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to create a diverse portfolio including two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art. In my classroom, the students will have the opportunity to not only connect and create, but also to present artwork communicating their thoughts, opinions and ideas.

Why Art?: Student Life

“If you ask me what I came into this life to do, I will tell you: I came to live out loud.”
